If you have a regular skincare regimen, then you probably make sure your skin is dewy and moisturized whenever possible. You also probably know the value of doing regular masks to deliver some extra skin loving nutrition into your well cared for face. But did you know that these same principles apply to your hair? While you no doubt wash and condition a couple times a week, doing a weekly, or semi-weekly hair mask to help lock in moisture and prevent split ends and frizz is a great way to keep your hair looking healthy, shiny, and ready for the day.
While most any carrier oil you can think of has benefits to offer your hair, there are a few particulars that really provide the most bang for your buck, namely Argan, Coconut and Shea butter. Each on their own is deeply nourishing and restorative to the hair, and when used together their powers are amplified three-fold. Argan oil penetrates into the hair shaft and helps to repair damaged hair follicles, while Coconut oil prevents breakage and frizz, and Shea butter restores dry and damaged hair to its former smooth and shiny glory. For an easy, at home restore and repair hair mask, follow this recipe:
1 Tbsp Argan oil
1 Tbsp Coconut oil
1 Tbsp Shea butter
Place all three oils in a small bowl and with a fork or wooden spoon mix and mash until evenly incorporated. In order to make this, you do not need your Shea butter to be melted, just soft enough to mix in with the other two oils. The same goes for your Coconut oil. Once all is mixed, apply to your ends, or all over your head, and leave in for a minimum of 20 minutes, and up to over night. If you are sleeping with this in, you may want to use a shower cap to keep the oils off your pillowcases. When ready to wash out, make sure to shampoo your hair twice in order to completely wash out the oils. Feel free to condition afterwards as usual.
This simple and effective at home hair mask is affordable, smells good, and works. It is safe for all hair types, and you can even add an essential oil such as Rosemary for added hair and scalp nourishing benefits. Make a larger batch and store for future use, or make fresh each time. Your hair will thank you for it.
