Essential Oils for Children

Lately there has been a trend toward holistic products for children. This is because many of the medications and chemicals that adults use are not safe for children, but parents are still looking for a way to alleviate their kids' discomfort. In addition, many holistic products don't have the same negative side effects that traditional medications do.

Essential oils are a great alternative solution to help comfort kids and alleviate their pain or symptoms from sicknesses. They contain no amino acids or peptides so children cannot have an allergic reaction to them. They are pure, contain only one ingredient and contain no chemicals or detergents that could be irritating to young children. Most of them work by means of aromatherapy or as a topical solution. There are many essential oils that are safe to use with kids and all of them serve different, useful purposes.

Lavender. Lavender is well known for its calming effect on children. It can be added to their bath (mix with milk for better dispersion) to help get them ready for bedtime. Put a couple drops on a tissue while you're feeding a baby to strengthen the association between this scent and peaceful feelings. For older children, tuck a tissue containing these drops between the sheets an hour before bed.

Chamomile. This essential oil has a topically soothing effect. It can be used in conjunction with an ice cube and a washcloth for a teething baby. Roman Chamomile can be used to ward off temper tantrums. It can also be used to calm babies and works well alongside lavender.

Citrus. Different types of citrus oils can be used for different purposes. Mandarin can be used to calm anxiety or stress. Other citrus oils like lemon or grapefruit can be used as a cleaning agent.

Eucalyptus. Eucalyptus smithi is the type approved for use with children. It can help ease cold and flu symptoms. Place a few drops in a bowl of hot water or in a vaporizer inside the child's room to ease congestion. It is not to be used with babies under 2 months of age.

Tea Tree Oil. This can be used on spider bites or bee stings to relieve itching and irritation.

It's best to check on dosage information and age appropriateness of each essential oil before using them with children. Then, introduce them into their environment slowly to make sure they'll work well with you kids. Once you've brushed up on you essential oils, they can be a great addition to your childcare routine.
