Nobody likes to get sick. Our body aches, we can’t breathe very well, and it feels almost impossible to get anything on our to-do list done and out of the way. What if there was a way to get rid of that sick, creaky body ache that resigns you to the bed with nothing to do but wait and get better? Thankfully, a popular culinary herb known as marjoram also doubles as a pain relieving essential oil for those times when your body aches and you’re stuck in bed.
The Latin name for marjoram is origanum vulgare, meaning “joyful mountain”, and is a testament to how beautiful and happy the flowers look along the hillsides where they grow. The Greeks used marjoram for a plethora of purposes, including dropsy and convulsions. Crowns of marjoram flowers were placed on newly married couples’ heads, and if marjoram was found growing on graves, it was said that the dead were happy.
Marjoram’s association with happiness and joy can be taken quite literally, as it takes away the pain and body ache associated with colds, fevers, and general inflammatory conditions. This is an absolute godsend, as we all know how un-enjoyable being sick is. It’s already enough that you can’t easily breathe, go out and have fun, and get everything taken care of on your to-do list. Adding physical pain into the mix is just the worst! Marjoram essential oil serves to reduce that pain, which in turn helps you feel better, faster.
Marjoram essential oil also contains natural antibacterial and antiviral properties that can help you fight off your cold and sore throat. But you don’t have to wait to be sick in order to use marjoram essential oil. It can be used just as well if you have a sore back, tight knee, or tension headache. Because marjoram is a natural muscle relaxant and antispasmodic, muscle cramps, twitches, and aches can all benefit from the use of marjoram essential oil.
Being sick is no fun at all. It’s hard, painful, and definitely not efficient. It can be an extra struggle if you are a mother with small children, or if your job won’t allow you to take adequate time off to heal. Thankfully, marjoram essential oil is easy to apply- simply place a few drops in your favorite carrier oil or cream and rub into the affected area. Alternatively, you can simply place a drop on each temple or under your nose for a more aroma therapeutic effect.
