Essential oils have a multitude of uses and they continue to be used across the world. Even those who use essential oils daily are often surprised to learn that there are a number of different ways of distilling essential oils. In fact, there are three unique ways to distil essential oils: water distillation, steam distillation, and water and steam distillation. Here at RainShadow Labs, we produce essential oils using all three distillation techniques. Before you visit our online store, let us explain the three different methods of distilling essential oils and why ours are the best available.

Methods of Distilling Essential Oils

As mentioned before, there are three methods of distilling essential oils: water distillation, steam distillation, and water & steam distillation. Each of these methods are appropriate for distilling different types of essential oils. Water distillation, for example, is most commonly used with flowers, like roses. This form of distilling essential oils is perfect for flowers because direct steam would cause the flowers to clump together, making it difficult for steam to pass through. Steam distillation, on the other hand, is the most commonly used method for distilling essential oils. Steam distillation works by injecting steam into a still filled with the raw materials to make essential oils. As the steam passes through, essential oils are the final product. In addition to these methods, there is also a mixture of steam and water distillation. This method is commonly used for herbs and leafy materials. Water remains below the raw material and steam is introduced from outside the still.
