Therapeutic Grade Essential Oils
Although essential oils have been in use for centuries, the essential oil industry really boomed in 2012 and the market became saturated with hundreds of companies claiming they have the best oils ever. But did you know that not all essential oils are created equal? There are different grades designed to define the quality of the oil. But what do companies mean when they say their essential oils are therapeutic grade? We know it can be confusing to navigate the large online essential oil market so here we’ll break it down for you.
When considering purchasing from an online essential oil supplier, look for the following information:
- Common name and Latin name (exact genus and species)
- Country of origin
- Part of plant processed
- Type of Extraction (distillation or expression)
- How it was grown (organic, wild-crafted, traditional)
At RainShadow Labs, we care about our customers. We want you to be informed about your purchase. We list the above items in the description of our essential oils so you know where our products come from. In many cases we also provide links to material safety data sheets (MSDS) so you know what cautions should be taken with a particular product (like a fragrance, for example).
Therapeutic Grade vs. Aromatherapy Grade
The term therapeutic grade was actually invented by genius marketers in the 90’s to sell more essential oils than other companies. However, there are no standards set by the government or any health agencies for so-called therapeutic grade essential oils.
Although therapeutic grade essential oils don’t actually exist, aromatherapy grade or clinical grade essential oils are a real measure of quality. Aromatherapy grade means the oil is the finest grade of essential oils. What requirements must an essential oil meet to be considered aromatherapy grade?
Aromatherapy means the scent of the given essential oil can rejuvenate and help the body. Aromatherapy has been proven to alleviate pains caused by stress or arthritis. It can ease injuries and aches. The list goes on and on.
At RainShadow Labs we offer aromatherapy grade oils. We like to carry a variety of essential oils to meet a variety of needs, and some people like to use some of our oils internally (when diluted and in small amounts) like our peppermint or cacao essential oils.
Uses For Essential Oil
What can essential oils be used for? The better question is what can’t you use them for! They can be used as incense in diffusers or pot pourri or diluted and used in homemade candles or soaps. They can also be mixed so you get the benefits of multiple oils at the same time.
Some of the more interesting uses for essential oils are:
- Menstrual cramp relief
- Facial toner
- Bug repellent
- Prevent fungus on plants
The options are endless! If you’ve got a problem, there’s most likely essential oil that can help.
