Pregnancy and Essential Oils

Pregnancy is a miraculous time as a woman's body grows and changes to support a small new life. Many of these miracles are accompanied by some discomfort, without much relief available. Because of the delicate nature of pregnancy, many medications and even some activities are off limits to mothers-to-be. However, there are several essential oils that can relive the discomforts of pregnancy and are safe to use during gestation. Here are a few options you may not have considered before.

Geranium essential oil can be used topically or diffused for aroma therapy. It reduces stress and acts as an antidepressant. This can help regulate moodiness and give you a little more energy. It can also diffuse digestive problems like nausea and constipation.

Ylang Ylang has many uses but two in particular are especially helpful during pregnancy: decreasing blood pressure and increasing sex drive. These are two very common complaints for pregnant ladies.

Lemon oil can lower blood pressure and calm an unsettled stomach. It also has the added benefit of satisfying cravings.

Melaleuca (also known as tea tree oil) is great for relieving pain and infection. This is a good option for pregnant ladies since many medications that perform these same functions are off-limits to them. It can be applied directly to the affected area for immediate relief.

All of the essential oils here are for use topically or in a diffuser for aromatherapy. None of them are meant to be ingested. Check with your OBGYN regarding the use and dosage of essential oils. Once you get the go ahead from your doctor, these lifesavers can be used to help you have a more enjoyable pregnancy.
