Are you a fan of DIY projects? We are! And while some people might think that DIY takes a lot of time and effort, the reality is that there are so many easy to make household and beauty essentials that take almost no time to make, and work just as well, if not better, than anything you could buy at the store or order online. One of those things is disinfecting spray. A household essential that many of us simply buy at the store, it’s just as easy to make at home with the added benefits of being non-toxic and aroma therapeutic.
Since there is no one recipe for home cleaning spray, use this recipe as a blueprint to make any desired modifications or experiments that you feel inspired to try. However, it is recommended that you keep the citrus peel or citrus essential oil in the recipe because it contains naturally occurring Limonene, which is a natural degreaser. It also smells absolutely heavenly, and depending on the citrus fruit you decide to use, will have aroma therapeutic benefits that include increased concentration (Lemon), mental stress reduction (Orange), help with depression (Lime) and the melting away of tension (Yuzu).
We include cloves in this recipe because of their smell and potent bacteria and germ killing properties. Just as clove essential oil is so effective when it comes to dental care and disinfecting, it does the same thing in this house cleaner. The sweet and spicy aroma also helps to further mask the smell of the vinegar.
The recipe is as follows:
- 4 cups white vinegar
- ¼ cup whole cloves
- ¼ cup orange (or other citrus fruit) peels, or orange essential oil
- large jar or other container
- spray bottle
Pour vinegar in jar or container of choice and add to it the cloves. If you are using citrus peels, add those to the vinegar as well. If you are going to use a citrus essential oil, you can add a half to whole teaspoon to the mix now, or wait until it has finished soaking before straining the mixture and adding it then. After adding your ingredients to the vinegar, cover with lid and let sit for a minimum of two weeks. Once at least two weeks has gone by, simply strain cloves and citrus peels from the vinegar and add to spray bottle with an equal amount of water. Add your essential oil(s) of choice if needed, and that’s it! Fragrant, non-toxic DIY home cleaning spray.
